Are you burned out, rest alone is not sufficient to recover – other actions are needed.

Sick leave

You have to take sick leave. If you continue to push yourself, you will only get worse and you need longer time to recover.

Better sleep

Poor sleep is common among people that are burned out. This can help:

  • focus on solving any problems during daytime - so they don’t keep you awake during the night
  • do not consume fluids or foods that contain caffeine after 5 pm
  • relax before bedtime with for instance calming music or meditation/relaxation
  • go to bed and get out of bed at fixed times

Healthy diet

Eating a healthy, more varied diet will help your body recover more quickly. Avoid sugar, coffee, tea, alcohol, white flour, yeast and red meat. Eat more fruits, vegetables and white meat.

Activity adjustment

To recover from burn-out you have to stop using too much of your resources and energy. Adjust your activities to the amount of energy you have, and consider:

  • how exhausting are your activities?
  • how long can you do each activity before becoming exhausted?
  • do you have to rest between the activities, and if yes, for how long?
  • are some activities so exhausting that you should to stop doing them for a while?
  • what changes should be done in the daily routine?
Treatment is usually also needed to recover from burn-out.
